A Puna man is facing charges after reportedly assaulting his father with a knife and stick at a residence in Eden Roc.

Hawai‘i Island police officers came in contact with the victim at Hilo Medical Center on Friday. The 57-year-old man told Hilo Patrol officers that his son, later identified as 30-year-old Mark Nakoa Akina, assaulted him at a residence on Paniolo Street during the evening hours of Wednesday and into the later afternoon hours of Thursday.

“The victim also reported being punched and kicked numerous times and threatened to be killed by the suspect,” according to a Hawai‘i Island police press release this morning.

The victim was able to escape when he defended himself by striking back and fled the residence to another family member’s home nearby. There, he hid from his son, and was taken Hilo Medical Center for treatment on Friday.

The Eden Roc native was taken into custody at the home where the assault occurred. Akina is facing the following charges:

  • Two counts of second-degree assault
  • Kidnapping
  • First-degree terroristic threatening
  • Abuse family household member

Akina’s bail was set at $82,000. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance this afternoon in Hilo District Court.
