Maui wildfires update: 115 people confirmed dead with 850 still unaccounted for

The death toll in the Lāhainā wildfire has grown to 115 with approximately 850 people still unaccounted for, Maui officials confirmed.

As of Monday, 100% of the single-story residential properties were searched in the disaster area in Lāhainā, that spanned approximately 3.5 miles. Search teams will now transition to searching multi-story residential and commercial properties.

The West Maui fire, ignited on Aug. 8 and fueled by hurricane-force winds, is now 90% contained and has burned 2,170 acres. The Lāhainā blaze is considered to be the deadliest in U.S. history after it razed the old fishing village’s Front Street to the ground.

The Olinda fire has burned 1,081 acres and is 85% contained and the Kula fire scorched 202 acres and is also 85% contained. Maui Fire Department reassured the public that there are “no active fire threats” at this time with any of the three fires. The fires are not advancing, but full containment can be more difficult to establish and determine in urban settings, according to the department.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited Maui on Monday to assess the damage of the wildfire disaster area in Lāhainā and meet with survivors and first responders who were impacted by the fires.

Biden and a contingent of state, federal, and state officials — including Gov. Josh Green, Sen. Brian Schatz, Sen. Mazie Hirono, Rep. Jill Tokuda, Rep. Ed Case, Mayor Richard Bissen, Maui County Councilmembers, and OHA Chair Hulu Lindsey — reiterated the commitment to rebuilding Lāhainā in a manner consistent with the priorities of area residents who were impacted by the tragedy.

Maui police have identified 13 individuals killed in the West Maui fire. Police say 22 other individuals have been identified, but their family has not been located or notified of their passing.
