Hawai‘i police releases weekly DUI statistics

Eighteen motorists on Hawai‘i Island were arrested from July 24-30 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Ten of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One of the drivers arrested was under the age of 21. Most of the arrests occurred in Kona where six people were taken into custody.

So far this year, Hawai‘i Island police report 566 DUI arrests compared with 594 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7%.

Hawai’i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 493 major collisions so far this year compared with 464 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.3%.

Hawai‘i police reports a 59.1% decrease in fatal crashes. To date, there have been nine fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities — one of which had multiple deaths — compared with 22 fatal crashes, resulting in 24 fatalities for the same time last year.

Also, there was a 58.3% decrease for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
