12 motorists arrested for DUI on Big Island during week of July 17-23
Big Island police continue their crackdown on people who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant on island roadways.
During the week of July 17-23, police arrested 12 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions. One of the drivers arrested was younger than 21. So far this year, there have been 548 DUI arrests compared with 580 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.5%.
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 467 major collisions so far this year compared with 451 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.5%.
To date in 2023, there have been nine fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities compared with 21 fatal crashes resulting in 23 fatalities during the same time period last year. This represents a decrease of 57.1% for fatal crashes and 56.5% for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
