Two emergency shelters are being readied in the Ka‘ū District ahead of Tropical Storm Calvin, which is expected to make landfall late Tuesday afternoon.

As the storm approaches, Hawai‘i County has also canceled camping permits islandwide from Tuesday through Wednesday. Only residents and farmers will be allowed on Waipi‘o Access Road.

The shelters are being prepped at the Robert Herkes Gymnasium and the Nāʻālehu Community Center. They will be staffed with trained personnel and will have all the essential supplies to accommodate residents. The shelters are pet friendly, requiring owners to be responsible for providing a carrier, food, and other supplies for their animals.

The Department of Public Works, Building and Engineering divisions will not conduct any permit or project inspections on Wednesday.
