Big Island police arrest 15 motorists for DUI the week of June 26-July 2
Big Island police continue to crack down on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on the island’s roadways, arresting 15 drivers for DUI during the week of June 26-July 2.
Four of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions; one of the drivers was younger than 21. So far this year, there have been 499 DUI arrests compared with 526 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.13 percent.
The Hawai’i Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 432 major collisions so far this year compared with 387 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.63 percent.
To date, there have been nine fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities this year on Big Island roadways compared with 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities during the same time period last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 50 percent for fatalities.
