Kimo Carvalho to serve as HomeAid Hawaiʻi’s executive director

Kimo Carvalho, a nonprofit executive with nearly 20 years of experience in Hawaiʻi’s health and human services sector, has been selected by HomeAid Hawaiʻi’s board of directors to lead the organization. 

His career has included development of multiple housing projects for the homeless, from renovations to new construction.

Formerly Aloha United Way’s Vice President of Community Impact, Carvalho led the ALICE Initiative and partnership developments with its network of more than 300 agencies. ALICE is an acronym for asset limited, income constrained, employed and represents the growing number of families who are unable to afford the basics of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care and technology despite working.

Prior to that, Carvalho served as an executive director at Liliuʻokalani Trust and led efforts to design and build Lydia House for youth in crisis.

Carvalho’s background also includes working as the community relations director for the state’s largest homeless provider, The Institute for Human Services, where he supported its expansion to operate nine facilities, including Hale Mauliola, Kahauiki Village and multiple medical respite homes.

“We are entering a new era in expanding housing solutions to address homelessness with plans to be the State’s Kauhale village developer,” said Harry Saunders, HomeAid Hawaiʻi president. “Kimo brings a wealth of experience and innovative thinking while serving as a bridge between the construction and provider communities.”

Established in 1995, HomeAid Hawaiʻi is a 501c3 and one of 19 affiliates nationwide that brings together building industry professionals to support construction of facilities for people experiencing or are at risk of homelessness.

Carvalho takes the helm following former Executive Director Nani Medeiros’ appointment to Gov. Josh Green’s cabinet as his first Chief Housing Officer.
