UPDATE: Flood advisory extended to Thursday; Hilo roads closed due to flooding

Updated at 6:15 a.m. on March 2: The National Weather Service has extended flood advisory until 9 a.m. on Thursday.

At 5:26 a.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated moderate to heavy rain continuing over the windward Big Island, with the heaviest rain falling along the Hamakua Coast as well as the Hilo and Volcano areas. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour in the heaviest showers. Stream levels remain elevated as well.

Road closures: Motorists should avoid Kamehameha Avenue and Pauahi Street in Hilo due to flooding. Kamehameha Avenue between Ponahawai Street and Bishop Street is closed.

Pauahi Street between Aupuni Street and Kamehameha Avenue is also closed and will require a detour of traffic for the next 4 to 6 hours. Motorists are being advised to detour using Waianuenue Avenue and Kīlauea Avenue.

At 9:02 p.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated moderate to locally heavy rain over windward Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 1 inch per hour and stream levels are on the rise.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kapaʻau, Honokaʻa, Papaikou, Honomu, Pepeekeo, Hakalau, Ninole, Laupahoehoe, Mountain View, Glenwood, Volcano, Ookala, Keaau, Paauilo, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland Estates and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
