Flood advisory in effect until 10:30 Friday night

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Hawai‘i Island following excessive rainfall.

Impacts under the advisory set to end at 10:30 p.m. include minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas and in streams.

At 7:26 p.m. on Friday, radar indicated heavy rain and thunderstorms over the North Kohala District of the Big Island near Waimea, according to the weather service.
Additional thunderstorms are occurring near South Point and Hawaiian Ocean View Estates. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Rain also continues over other parts of the island.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kapaau, Honokaa, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Wood Valley, Hawaiian Acres, Pahala, Keaau, Papaikou, Orchidland Estates, Pepeekeo, Honomu, Hakalau, Punaluu Beach and Ninole.

The weather service advises those on Hawai‘i Island to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

The flood advisory may be extended beyond 10:30 p.m. if flooding persists.
