Video posted on the Hawai’i Department of Transportation Facebook page shows crews packing up after clearing fallen trees on Hawai’i Belt Road (Route 19) in the vicinity of mile marker 46. The district engineer said it’s still windy out there. Motorists should drive carefully.

Reports of power outages and trees on power lines or block roads were widespread. Debris on Highway 19 in Honoka‘a has forced a momentary closure of the Honoka‘a Recycling and Transfer Station.

According to county officials, the waste trailer chute, located at the recycling and transfer station, cannot be transported to the landfill in West Hawai‘i until the road is reopened.

Solid Waste Division is working on sending an empty trailer from Hilo, at which time the Honoka‘a transfer station is expected to reopen to the public sometime later this afternoon. The scheduled closure at 6 p.m.
