Keiki and their ‘ohana in the Hāmākua area had the chance to celebrate the holidays while getting to know their community police officers during a recent Christmas celebration.

Nearly 100 children from 3 to 15 years old showed their Christmas spirit Dec. 3 during the Hāmākua Christmas Carnival at the Pāpa‘ikou Gymnasium. The event, co-sponsored by the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Hilo Community Policing Section and the Hawai‘i County Parks and Recreation Department, included slides prepared by the Ka‘apuni ‘ohana, games and jumping castles. The Hawai‘i Police Activities League also donated prizes for the winners of the games.

Not only was it a celebration of the season, the carnival also offered an informal way for the area’s residents to get to know the community policing officers who serve their district.
