A large brush fire burning in Pāhala since Sunday is now 80% contained.

The Maile Fire has scorched about 100 acres of macadamia nut orchards. Hawai‘i Fire crews will be working today to extinguish hot spots. There are no anticipated evacuations. No structures were damaged.

Firefighters first responded to the blaze on Sunday at 11:03 a.m. The flames moved fast as they were driven by high winds that persisted into Monday, resulting in a red flag warning. The warning was lifted Monday afternoon.

The fire department continues to advise the public to avoid the area and be aware of emergency response vehicles and personnel in the area. Road closures are probable due to fire debris and clearing operations.
