Queen Elizabeth the II Has Died at Age 96
Queen Elizabeth the II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, has died, according to officials from Buckingham Palace. She was 96 years old.
The palace announced she died at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland, where members of the royal family had rushed to her side after her health took a turn for the worse, Hawaii News Now reported.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” a palace statement, posted Thursday, Sept. 8, read. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Her 73-year-old son Prince Charles automatically became king and will be known as King Charles III, his office announced. Charles’ second wife, Camilla, will be known as the Queen Consort.
In 1963, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip came to Hawai‘i after a stop in Fiji. Then-Gov. John Burns greeted them on the tarmac, offering the queen a four-strand golden-orange ilima lei — a lei once reserved for Hawaiian rulers, an HNN story reported.
The queen also met legendary waterman Duke Kahanamoku and his wife.
HNN reported a crowd of about 4,500 greeted them, according to news accounts at the time.
