8 Motorists Arrested For DUI
Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.
During the week of Aug. 22-28, police arrested eight motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 659 DUI arrests compared with 723 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9%. There have been 540 major accidents so far this year compared with 528 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.3%.
To date, there have been 23 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities, on Big Island roadways this year compared with 15 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities, for the same time period last year. This represents an increase of 53.3% for fatal crashes and 66.7% for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
