19 Motorists Arrested For DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of Aug. 15-21, police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 651 DUI arrests compared with 713 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7%. There have been 517 major accidents so far this year compared with 512 during the same period last year, an increase of 1%.

So far this year, there have been 23 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities, compared with 14 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities, for the same time period last year. This represents an increase of 64.3% for fatal crashes and 78.6% for fatalities.

Police advise that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
