Fire crews continue to address hot spots at brush fire in Kaʻū that ignited Wednesday afternoon in the Discovery Harbor Subdivision.
Hawai‘i Fire officials reported 15-16 acres had been scorched as of Wednesday evening. As of 8 a.m., officials confirm the blaze is 80% contained. All the structures in the area have been protected.
Officials say they will remain on scene all day. A dozer is being brought in the break up heavy vegetation as a precaution. While there are no active road closures, HFD is asking motorists to avoid the area near Wakea and Kahiki Streets at this time.
Fire officials also recommend residents downwind of the burn area to close windows due to smoke, ash and dust. Anyone experiencing difficulty breathing is advised to call 911.
