18 Motorists Arrested For DUI
Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.
During the week of June 20-26, police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 511 DUI arrests on Big Island roadways compared with 578 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.6%. There have been 375 major accidents so far this year on the island compared with 382 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.8%.
To date, there have been 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities, on the island compared with 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities, during the same time period last year. That represents an increase of 50% for fatal crashes and 66.7% for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
