Flood Advisory Issued for Areas of Kaʻū

The National Weather Service has extended its flood advisory for Kaʻū till 6:45 p.m.

At 3:44 p.m., radar indicated areas of heavy showers of thunderstorms over mainly interior portions of the Big Island. The heaviest rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour on the upper Kaʻū slopes and in Waimea and Waipiʻo Valley.

Several other locations have been identified as areas that could experience flooding. Those areas include
Hilo, Captain Cook, Waikōloa Village, Kapaʻau, Honokaʻa, Pōhakuloa Training Area, Pōhakuloa Camp, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hōnaunau, Honalo, Puʻuanahulu, Kainaliu, Kealakekua and Kamuela.

A flood advisory was issued for areas in Kaʻū till 6 p.m.

At 2:50 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour over the slopes of Mauna Loa between Volcano and Pāhala, according to the National Weather Service. Additional heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected through the afternoon.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Wood Valley, Pāhala, Punaluʻu Beach, Kawa Flats and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams is expected.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. This advisory may need to be extended beyond 6 p.m. if flooding persists.
