Flood Advisory Issued for Kaʻū District

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the Kaʻū District until 6 p.m. due to excessive rainfall.

At 2:48 p.m., radar indicated a nearly stationary band of heavy rain over the Kaʻū communities. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Additional rain is expected during the next few hours. Impacts include minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Kawa Flats, Punaluʻu Beach, Nāʻālehu, Pāhala, Wood Valley, Hawaiian Ocean View, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Waiohinu, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Park Kahuku Unit and Discovery Harbour.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. This advisory may need to be extended if flooding persists.
