Hawai’i Island Police are investigating a public accident that occurred in the Puna district, which left a 36-year-old male in critical condition.

On Monday, at about 3 am, Puna patrol responded to a report of a fisherman in distress at the cliff area off of Paradise Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Upon arrival, it was determined that a 36-year-old male was fishing off of the cliff at the bottom of Paradise Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park area, when a large section of the cliffs edge crumbled causing the male to fall approximately 30 feet to the water’s edge below.

Hawai’i Fire Department personnel responded to the scene where the male was rescued and transported to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition with head and neck injuries.

There is no foul play suspected. Police believe the incident is due to the unstable terrain from which the victim was fishing.

Police remind the public tht even if you are familiar with an area, be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Also, make sure someone knows where you are at, or as in this case, have someone with you in case there is a problem so they can call for help.
