NWS Issues New Flood Advisory for East Hawaiʻi

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for parts of East Hawaiʻi on Tuesday evening until 11 p.m.

At 7:58 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the Big Island from Volcano to Laupahoehoe. Rain was falling at a rate around 1 inch per hour.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Mountain View, Papaikou, Glenwood, Pepeʻekeo, Volcano, Honomu, Keaʻau, Hakalau, Hawaiian Acres, Ninole, Orchidlands Estates, Laupahoehoe, Oʻokala, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Wainaku, Paukaa, Kurtistown and Fern Acres.

The flooding will be caused by excessive rainfall. Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and streams.

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 11 p.m. if flooding persists.
