Flood Advisory Issued for East Hawaiʻi
UPDATE 4:02 p.m.: The flood advisory has been canceled.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for East Hawaiʻi until 5:30 p.m.
According to NWS, trained weather spotters reported heavy rain over Windward Big Island in the Hilo, Puna and eastern Kaʻū Districts at approximately 2:27 p.m. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Mountain View, Orchidlands Estates, Volcano, Keaʻau, Pāhoa, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Papaikou, Eden Roc, Fern Forest, Fern Acres, Kurtistown, Ainaloa, Kalapana, Leilani Estates and Nanawale Estates.
Impacts include minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and streams. Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 5:30 p.m. if flooding persists.
