NWS Extends Wildfire Warning Into Weekend

The National Weather Service has extended a red flag warning for the leeward portion of all Hawaiian Islands until 6 pm Saturday evening. The initial warning was issued through 6 pm Friday night.

Gusty winds in combination with dry fuels and low relative humidity levels will result in elevated fire danger throughout Saturday. Any fires that develop will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

East to northeast trade winds are expected at 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Humidity is expected to range from 35% to 45% during the afternoon hours.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. A red flag warning does not predict new fire starts.
