HFD Rescues Injured Hiker

Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel rescued a hiker from Pi‘ihonua on Monday following a report of an injury.

Emergency responders from the Kaumana District responded to a 2:08 pm call of a hiker in his 30s who slipped and fell on the side embankment of a river and suffered a possible hip fracture.

HFD Chopper 1 dropped two fire rescue specialists in the area. Then, with the use of a long line and litter, the chopper recovered the hiker and HFD personnel. All parties were safely extricated to a landing zone.

The injured hiker was transported by ambulance to the emergency room at Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
