Texas Man Dies in Vehicle-Bicycle Crash

The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that a 73-year-old Texas man died following a vehicle-bicycle crash Thursday morning, July 19, on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway Route 19 near the 85-mile marker.

He has been identified as Roy Johnson.

Responding to a 7:03 a.m. call, police determined that a bicycle, operated by Johnson, was traveling northbound on the shoulder when he attempted a U-Turn and rode his bicycle directly in front of a silver 2018 Nissan Versa sedan. The Nissan sedan operated by a 30-year-old Czech Republic man was traveling northbound on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway Route 19 and collided with Johnson.

Johnson died at the scene. The operator of the Nissan Sedan did not sustain any injuries.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a Coroner’s Inquest investigation and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at (808) 326-4646 ext. 229.

This is the 20th traffic fatality this year compared with 20 at this time last year.
