Damages to Hōkūleʻa Postpone Hawai‘i Island Visits

After sustaining damages to its hull while sailing off the coast of Hawai‘i Island in early May, the Hōkūleʻa was repaired Friday, May 12, and departed for a two-week visit at Maunalua Bay and Hawai‘i Kai to continue the Mahalo, Hawaiʻi Sail and celebrate the Maunalua Heritage Festival.

Hōkūleʻa will return to Hawaiʻi Island again later this year to reschedule school and community tours that were postponed due to the damages.

Organized by the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS), the Mahalo, Hawaiʻi Sail is an outreach event to express gratitude to Hawaiʻi’s people with a Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia homecoming, share lessons learned from the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, and deepen the organization’s connection and commitment to caring for the environment in the islands. During port visits in the multi-stop event, crewmembers engage with the community through outreach events, service projects, crew presentations and canoe tours.
