Kīlauea Volcano’s current eruption continues to rip through the Leilani Estates subdivision on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. The red hot liquid rock is erupting in a series of fissures, sending fountains of lava 150 feet into the air in spectacular displays. Roads are being covered, and several houses have been destroyed. Most of the community’s residents have honored the mandatory evacuation, but some remain with their homes, watching and waiting. For the time being, she appears to have spared the geothermal plant east of Leilani. But noxious gases are hampering the work of first responders and have been deemed highly dangerous to anyone in the area.
