Family Medicine MD Joins Kona Kaiser Permanente

Six healthcare professionals have joined Kaiser Permanente in Hawai‘i—one on the Big Island and five on O‘ahu.

They join Kaiser Permanente’s team of more than 600 healthcare providers in Hawai‘i’s largest medical organization, the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, which provides medical services to Kaiser Permanente’s 250,000-plus members in the state.

Serena Edwards, MD, specializes in family medicine at Kaiser Permanente’s Kona Medical Office on the Big Island. She received her medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed her family medicine residency at Sutter Hospital/Vista Family Health Clinic in Santa Rosa, Calif. Prior to becoming a medical doctor, Dr. Edwards worked as a phlebotomist and birth doula.

Rashmi Baragi, MD, is an infectious disease specialist at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Wayne State University and completed her internal medicine residency and fellowship at the University of Illinois Medical Center. Dr. Baragi is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease.

Allison Shykowski, CGC, is a board-certified genetic counselor at Kaiser Permanente’s Mapunapuna Medical Office. She received her master’s degree in genetic counseling from the University of Pittsburgh and her bachelor’s degree in cellular, molecular and microbial biology from the University of Calgary. Shykowski is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.

Kristen Nagata, MD, specializes in radiology at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. She
received her medical degree from the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine and completed her residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Southern California, where she also completed a women’s imaging/body MRI fellowship. Dr. Nagata is certified by the American Board of Radiology and an expert in mammography. She is a member of the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America.

Lisa Boonprakong, MD, is a doctor specializing in emergency medicine at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. She received her medical degree from the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine and completed her residency in emergency medicine at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Boonprakong is board certified in emergency medicine.

Emily Sumner, MD, specializes in family medicine at Kaiser Permanente’s Waipio Medical Office. She received her medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed her residency in family medicine and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
