One Dead as Result of Highway 19 Head-On

First responders from the Hawai‘i County Fire Department arrived at the scene of a head-on collision involving three vehicles near Mile Marker 36 on Highway 19 in Pa‘auilo in the Honoka’a District at 9:12 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

A four-door sedan heading south on Highway 19 apparently crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a dump truck heading north.

The occupant of the sedan was ejected and pinned under the flatbed trailer that the dump truck was towing. The occupant was pronounced “dead on arrival.”

The driver of the dump truck was treated and released at the scene.

Two occupants of a sport utility vehicle following the sedan heading south was also involved, suffering minor damage. The two occupants had no injuries.

Traffic was rerouted through Hauola and Pohakea Road.
