UPDATE: May 18, 2017: Hawaiʻi Island police have identified the man who died after being pulled out of Makaʻiwa Bay on May 15, 2017, as 66-year-old Mark Pine of Walnut Creek, CA.

An autopsy determined that he died as a result of a medical condition.

Patrol Officers responded to the report that an unresponsive man was pulled out of the water at Maka’iwa Bay in the Kohala Coast resort area at around 9:37 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017.

Upon police arrival, Hawaiʻi Fire Department medics were performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation before transporting the victim to North Hawai’i Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 10:55 a.m.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police have begun a coroner’s inquest and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
