Firefighters Extinguish Puna Structure Blaze

FireDepartmentLogoFirst-responder units arrived at the scene of a structure fire on 29th Avenue in East Puna on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 4:50 a.m.

Firefighters found  30-by-30-foot, single-story wooden structure fully engulfed in flames. 

The structure was unpermitted, not Insured and did not have electricity.

The fire was brought under control at 5:02 a.m. and extinguished at 5:38 a.m.  

Damage was estimated at $40,000.  

A male resident, in his 40s, was not found in the structure.  A female resident was accounted for.  

The Red Cross was requested for assistance for the 35-year-old female resident.

Red Cross disaster volunteers will meet with affected residents and ensure their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing are met.

Caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.
