UPDATE: Oct. 21, 2:08 p.m.

An active search for the missing hiker commenced at daybreak. 

Despite dense forest with a thick canopy, a severe landscape with high embankment, rivers , waterfalls and poor visibility from air and ground, the hiker was found halfway down a waterfall at 10:20 a.m.. 

Chopper 1 personnel transported the hiker to Medical Unity 11, which was waiting on Ka‘alaiki Road.

Medical Unity 11 transferred the hike to the Kaʻū Hospital Emergency Room.  The hikers condition is unknown at this time.

ORIGINAL POST: Oct. 21, 9:34 a.m.

The Hawai‘i Country Fire Department responded to a report of a missing hiker at a forest reserve off of Kaalaiki Road on Thursday, Oct. 21.at 2:04 p.m.

HCFD rescue personnel  found off-road access to the reported location. The reporting party met with and escorted rescue personnel to last known location of missing hiker.

Chopper 1 arrived on scene and proceeded to GPS coordinates, but did not find the hiker.

An active search commenced until it got dark. The search resumed at 6 a.m. this morning.
