Kona Dance and Performing Arts Studio Opens
Kona Dance and Performing Arts, a new nonprofit arts organization in Kealakekua, held its grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 13, hosting over 250 keiki and adults from the community.
The event started with a blessing ceremony by Mahina Saunders and an introduction of the eight board of directors members and seven teachers present.
Seven free dance classes were offered over the course of the three-hour event. The dance floor was filled with dancers of all levels from ages 2 to 70.
Over 30 giveaway prizes were donated by local businesses and restaurants, including a ziplining adventure for two from KapohoKine Adventures and a free month of outdoor boot camp from You Vs. You Fitness.
KDAPA students performed tap, jazz, musical theatre and ballet routines, and entertained guests while board members offered free face painting, crafts, a photo booth and popcorn.
The Kohala Burger and Taco Truck served food during the event and donated 35% of their proceeds to KDAPA.
Representatives from other Big Island arts organizations attended the event, including The Aloha Theatre, Moonshot Play Space and Waimea Community Theatre & Chorus.
The studio opened registration for its 2016-17 dance season during the event and waived registration fees.
Some classes are half full. To secure a spot in a tap, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, contemporary, hip hop, yoga or breakdance class for keiki, register online or call (808) 657-4473.
