Youth basketball players from around the island are invited to take part in the Fourth Annual Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp, held July 26-29 at the Pana’ewa Covered Play Courts and the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The camp, organized by the County of Hawai’i Department of Parks and Recreation, is named after Yagi, the all-time wins leader at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo who led the Vulcans-Hawai’i Basketball School for 37 years.

Lead clinicians at this year’s camp are David Kaneshiro, University of Hawai’i at Hilo women’s head basketball coach, and GE Coleman, head coach for UH-Hilo’s men’s squad. Assisting them will be other college and high school coaches, including Honoka’a High School girls basketball coach Daphne Honma.

The morning session will involve a number of fundamental drills, highlighting agility and ball handling. After a lunch break, camp attendees will get an opportunity to use what they have picked up in game situations, with each day’s events slated to run until 3:30 p.m. Awards will be handed out to outstanding participants on the final day of the camp.

Registration forms can be picked up at all county gymnasiums, at Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Lū‘au Hale, and online. The registration fee for each child is $60 through July 12. After that, it raises to $70.

All campers receive a camp t-shirt and group photo.
