Cybil Ebreo-Castillo and Paul Ikaika Tanoue welcomed a newborn into the world this week, joining a unique group of “leap babies.”

Nevaeh Kahanuola Tanoue was born at North Hawai’i Community Hospital on Feb. 29, or Leap Day, which occurs only once every four years.

According to NHCH, the parents, who are from Honoka’a, didn’t even think about Leap Day until friends and family noted the unique birthday.

Nevaeh, whose name is “heaven” spelled backwards, joins her parents and 16-month-old brother Aiden. The family says they plan to celebrate baby Nevaeh’s birthday on March 1.

A baby being born on Leap day is a one in 1,461 chance.
