Konawaena Ranked #1 in DI Girls State Tourney
Konawaena has been ranked at the top of every major statewide ranking poll since the beginning of the season. So it came as no surprise on Sunday that the Wildcats were given the top seed in this week’s OC16/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Basketball Championships, which takes place this week on Oahu.
Under the direction of head coach Bobbie Awa, Konawaena tallied a 12-0 Big Island Interscholastic Federation record, good for another league championship in Division I. Overall, the Wildcats amassed a 23-1 record.
The road to a seventh state championship for Konawaena begins on Wednesday when the Wildcats face either Punahou or Farrington in the quarterfinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The other seeded team in Konawaena’s side of the Moanalua bracket is Leilehua, seeded fourth out of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
BIIF runner-up Hilo (21-3, 10-2) will open tournament play on Tuesday against Radford, another OIA entrant, at 5 p.m. The game will be played at Kalani High School. The winner will face third-seeded Maryknoll, the champion of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna received the second seed in the tournament. The Lunas were ranked behind Konawaena in the polls all season.
The championship game will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. It will be televised on OC16.
