Week one of the college baseball season has wrapped up, and Hawai’i Preparatory Academy graduate Jayse Bannister has already taken home an award for an early performance at Holy Names University.

Bannister, now a senior at Holy Names, was named PacWest Conference Pitcher of the Week in baseball for games played between Jan. 25-31.

In an opening game start against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Bannister pitched six innings, allowing just a home run with four strikeouts and two walks. By the time his start ended, the game was tied at 1-1, but the bullpen failed to keep the game close, allowing Monterey Bay to defeat the Hawks by the final score of 13-1 in the first game of an opening day doubleheader.

Last season, Bannister accumulated 41 strikeouts and threw three complete games. He finished the year with a 3-4 record and a 3.67 earned run average.

Holy Names (0-2) will visit the University of Hawai’i at Hilo for a pair of doubleheaders on April 18 and April 19. Up next for the Hawks, however, is a home game against Menlo on Tuesday.
