The Hawai’i County Fire Department responded to a vehicle accident off of Highway 11 at the 30 mile marker in Volcano Thursday night that resulted in a fatality.

Firefighters responded to a 9:40 p.m. call of a single motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, fire personnel noted that the vehicle was off the roadway and up against trees.

The vehicle “appears to have major damage, split in half almost,” according to authorities.

A lone occupant was found outside the vehicle with no signs of life. HFD officials say the body may have been slightly pinned underneath the vehicle.
