A small turnout and a smaller group of entries forced the Big Island Auto Club to shorten its July Points Meet to a one-day event.

Veteran track announcer Russ Roberts told Big Island Now that there were only four entries for the month’s event. Less than 100 spectators arrived Saturday at the Hilo Drag Strip to watch the event.

Dean Kalawe of Kea’au won the “Quick Four” bracket race in his Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. He clocked in at 132 miles per hour at 8.92 seconds. David Francis of Paauilo drove his Chevrolet Vega to a runner-up finish.

Kalawe was also the fastest on the track throughout the day. His best finish came in at 8.76 seconds, topping out at 154 mph.
