Man Arrested, Charged After ‘Smashing Televisions’

A 48-year-old man was charged with a felony following an incident that occurred at the Kailua-Kona Walmart Monday evening.

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that more than a dozen televisions were smashed as customers shopped at the store.

Kona Patrol officers responded at 6:49 p.m. to a report of a disturbance. They arrived to the store, located on Henry Street, to find the suspect outside the store with another customer.

While on the scene. police learned from witnesses that the suspect, identified as Alexander Springer, took a bat from the store and used it to destroy the televisions. Witnesses told police that a customer stopped Springer and took him outside where they together waited for police.

Springer was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal property damage, a Class C felony. Police say the man has no permanent address.

Bail for Springer was set at $2,000 and he remained at the police cellblock awaiting his initial court appearance on Tuesday.
