Konawaena Announces Athletic Award Winners
Konawaena High School announced its senior athletic awards during an assembly on Thursday.
The Wildcat of the Year award, given to the top male and female student athlete, went to Kevin Medeiros and Shayli Nakamoto. The male and female Scholar Athlete Award, meanwhile, went to Skye Suzuki and Nikki Kunitomo.
Medeiros also received the Outstanding Senior Athlete award in boys basketball. He was an honor roll student each of the last four years and has captained the football and basketball teams. He will continue his football career at Whittier College, a Division III school in Whittier, Calif.
Nakamoto will attend Southern Virginia University, a Division III school in Buena Vista, Va., and will play soccer for the Knights. At Konawaena, she also lettered in cross country and track and field, and earned the Outstanding Senior Athlete award in each of the latter two sports.
Kunitomo, a three-year member of the National Honor Society, was also the Outstanding Senior Athlete award winner for girls tennis. She will continue her education at the University of Portland.
Suzuki earned the Outstanding Senior Athlete award in boys soccer. He lettered in baseball and soccer, and earned All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation Honorable Mention honors in soccer. He will also attend the University of Portland on a Presidential Scholarship.
During the assembly, junior Chanelle Molina was recognized for her Gatorade Player of the Year award in girls basketball. Molina also received an award in girls volleyball.
