With summer just around the corner, the Hawai’i State Public Library System Summer Reading Programs are about to kick-off.

Beginning on May 31 and lasting through July 18, public libraries across the state will begin their annual free reading programs surrounding the theme of “Heroes.”

Children, teens, and adults are all welcome to participate in the seven-week program. Participants who visit the library and complete at least one book per week are eligible to receive a free reading incentive, while supplies last.

The program will also feature performances by University of Hawai’i artists from the Statewide Cultural Extension Program.

Under the overall “Heroes” theme, each Summer Reading Program will have its own related theme.

Children will have the sub-theme “Every Hero Has a Story.” Pre-kindergarteners through sixth grade will be encouraged to find the “superheroes” within themselves as they read and learn about real life, fantasy, and everyday heroes. Students in this program will receive weekly incentives, such as school supplies, treats, and a Super Hero Activity Kit. Children will also be eligible to participate in a lucky drawing to win a backpack filled with school supplies.

Teens will participate in the program sub-themed “Unmask!” Those in seventh through 12th grade will be encouraged to “unmask” heroes of all kinds, including the heroes they might find in themselves. Weekly prizes that will be awarded to teens in this program include treats, customizable items like a 4-color pen with cushion grip, and a photo frame key chain. A lucky drawing for a 40-ounce Hydroflask at each library will also take place. Teens can also qualify for Pizza Hut’s “Get Caught Reading” Instagram Contest for the opportunity to win weekly prizes.
