Two special holiday events will be put on by the County of Hawai’i during the holiday season this year. The fourth annual “Magic of the Season” open house will be held at the Hawai’i County Building in Hilo, and the inaugural “A Holiday Family” affair will be held at the West Hawai’i Civic Center in Kona.

Beginning Monday Dec. 8 and running through Dec. 19, county volunteers will decorate dozens of trees at the Hawai’i County Building for Hilo’s “Magic of the Season.” The event runs every weeknight between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Among the many performances throughout the duration of the event are Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning performers Kuana Torres Kahele, Lehua Kalima, Henry Kapono, Cyril Pahinui, Darlene Ahuna, and Mark Yamanaka. Other local favorites are also scheduled to perform, including hula groups and the Hawai’i County Band.

On the Kona side of the island, Kon’a inaugural event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 12 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the West Hawai’i Civic Center. Community members in attendance can expect a pule by Kumu Keala Ching and performances by Ka Pa Hula Na Wai Iwi Ola and the Kealakehe Intermediate School Chorus and Ukulele Ensemble. A towel or mat for seating on the courtyard lawn is recommended.
