Hilo Colt Baseball Team Ousted at West Zone Tournament
Two consecutive losses have knocked the Hilo Colt baseball team out of the Colt West Zone Tournament in San Jose, Calif.
Hilo, facing elimination, lost Monday morning to San Bruno, Calif. by the score of 3-2, San Bruno avenged its 14-6 loss to the Hilo squad to open the tournament on Saturday.
Hilo’s task to remain alive in the eight-team double leg bracket was going to be tough. Hilo would have needed to win two games Monday to keep playing. Getting by San Bruno would have meant a rematch with the Riverside Red Wave, who beat Hilo 8-3 Sunday to knock the Big Island squad down to the loser’s bracket.
Brandyn Lee-Lehano gave up all three of San Bruno’s runs in four-and-a-third innings pitched. Two of the runs were unearned. Makoa Andres finished the game on the mound.
Waiakea High School teammates Mackanzy Maesaka and Bryce Felipe each drove in an RBI in the loss. Kegan Miura and Taylor Mondina each picked up a pair of doubles.
Colt baseball features the 15-16 year old age group. The Colt West Zone Tournament is being played at the Police Activities League field in San Jose, Calif. Eight teams covering four states are competing in the tournament. Hilo qualified for the field automatically with no other island in the state fielding a Colt team.
The Colt World Series will be held this year in Lafayette, Ind.
According to the team’s business manager, Robert Narimatsu, the team will return home on Thursday afternoon at the Hilo International Airport. The exact time of the arriving flight was not available.
