The parking lots at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area will be repaved under a project that begins on Monday.

The $650,000 project involves replacing the existing pavement with new asphalt, replacement of wheel stops and addition of striping and signage as needed. Other improvements are also planned related to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said the work will include clearing of unused areas adjacent to the parking lots for park use such as storage and additional parking in compliance with county permitting requirements.

The park will remain open during the project, which is expected to take up to 90 days to complete. During the work some parking areas will be closed for visitor safety. The contractor, Keauhou Kona Construction Co., may also need to close or narrow roadway access to complete the project.

Work is also planned for the parking areas at the Waialea portion of the recreation area. That portion of the park is located south of Hapuna at Waialea Bay, at what was previously known as Beach 69 for the number on the utility pole at the beginning of the access road.

Hapuna Beach is located 2.3 miles south of Kawaihae on Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway.
