The New City Nissan / HHSAA Girls Volleyball tournament begins Tuesday on Oahu, and five Hawai`i Island teams will be looking to win the league’s first state championship since Luella Aina coached Hilo High School to their second state championship victory in 1974.

If the Vikings want to win their third state championship, they would need to win four matches in four days. The Vikings lost to Kamehameha-Hawai`i in straight sets on Saturday night in the league championship, setting them up for the long tournament run. The Vikings finished the season at 15-2 and will open up the tournament on Tuesday at Kaimuki High School against the Pearl City Chargers, who was the sixth place team out of the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s Red West Division with a 9-5 record.
