Brittni Paiva and Keoki Kahumoku in Concert
Saint Patrick’s Day takes on an island flair with Hawaiian musicians Brittni Paiva and Grammy award winner Keoki Kahumoku on March 17, at the Kilauea Military Camp Theater in Volcanoes National Park.
The Aloha Bluegrass Band will also be joining ‘ukulele songstress Paiva, and slack-key guitarist Kahumoku for an evening of St. Paddy’s fun beginning at 7 p.m.
Kahumoku and Paiva have made an impression that spans far beyond these Hawaiian waters. At just 15 years old, Paiva’s debut album won a Na Hoku Hanohano award for Most Promising Artist of the Year. Her second album “Hear,” won for Best Ukulele Album of the Year from the Hawai’i Music Awards, and was given a Na Hoku Hanohano nomination. At 18, Paiva was nominated for three Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for her third self-titled album.
Kahumoku is another island name, whose lineage is well known and respected. Keoki grew up gigging with his father George Jr., and uncle Moses Kahumoku in the early ‘90’s at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort. He later moved with his family to Maui, where Keoki continued to perform and share his mana’o, or knowledge, beliefs and philosophy. During this time, Keoki also contributed to slack-key album compilations that won Grammy Awards from 2005 to 2009. He also won a Na Hoku Hanohano Award in 2005, for Compilation Album of the Year.
These professional artists continue to hone their craft and perform for appreciative audiences locally and abroad. Tickets are $22 in advance and are available from www.volcanoartcenter.org, or by calling 808-967-8222.
