Budget discussions before Hawai‘i County Council continue today with several departments outlining their priorities, including Parks and Recreation, Office of Aging and Environmental Management.

Charges stem from incidents that occurred in 2023 and 2024 when the suspect assaulted a former girlfriend, according to Hawai‘i Island police.

The man was identified as Mathen Jackson of Kailua-Kona; a witness at the beach said Jackson decided to jump off the cliff and subsequently became distressed in the strong current.

Arrests occurred in three out of the eight districts: 14 in Kona, five in Hilo and two in Puna.

Charges include first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle and reckless driving; Torres made his initial court appearance Monday, April 6, in Hilo District Court, during which his bail was maintained.
