Rizor Named Director of Laupahoehoe Charter School

A director of operations has been named for the new Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School.

David Rizor, former director of another charter school, the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences, will take over the Laupahoehoe operations July 1.

A spokeswoman for Laupahoehoe’s interim school board said Rizor has extensive experience in teaching and administration. He holds a Ph.D. degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wyoming.

Rizor will be charged with overseeing staff and developing innovative, project-based learning curriculum for the school, the spokeswoman said.

The board has also named Sue Deuber as hiring consultant. Deuber, who has a master’s degree in special education from the University of Cincinnati, helped found and oversee Voyager Public Charter School in Honolulu.

Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School officially opens its doors on July 1 and will be open to all children from kindergarten to grade 12, tuition free.

Formerly Laupahoehoe High & Elementary School, the institution made the conversion to a public charter school this year after a Circuit judge in April dismissed a lawsuit challenging the move. The lawsuit was filed by two teachers and the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
