A Small Craft Advisory is posted for Big Island leeward and southeast waters through 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. East winds up to 25 knots are forecasted along with rough seas of 7 to 11 feet. Inexperienced mariners should avoid navigating in these conditions.

Hilo side: Waist/head high surf is expected today. The best focal points for the trade swell could see overhead waves on the sets. Messy conditions continue due to the winds.

Kona side: Wave heights of ankle/thing high are expected for southerly exposures. Best breaks could get a bit bigger on the sets.

South: Wave heights ankle/thigh high today. Trade swell could get up waist/chest high.

Screen Shot 2015-05-17 at 10.00.39 PMA small mix of southerly swells brings small waves through the week. Storm activity in the Tasman Sea could bring us swell later this week and into the weekend. Another slightly larger swell is possible on Saturday.

Our current northwest is fading today. A northwest pulse is expected tomorrow with another on it’s heels for the weekend.

Keep in mind, surf heights are measured on the face of the wave from trough to crest. Heights vary from beach to beach, and at the same beach, from break to break.
